In this talk, M’hammed Kilito presents Kafila (caravan in Arabic). This photographic project examines the effects of climate change and human intervention on the crucial oasis ecosystems of Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Tunisia, and Mauritania. What sets this project apart is its innovative comparative approach, revealing the challenges and opportunities that oases face across the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region.
Building on knowledge gained through previous projects in Morocco, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, Kilito continues to explore and contrast the unique characteristics of each oasis, capturing individual stories that highlight the intricate relationships between human activity and the natural environment in these vital regions. His work provides fresh insights into the urgent need to preserve these ecosystems and promote their long-term sustainability. Through his lens, Kilito brings attention to the importance of these cases, both for the communities that rely on them and for the region’s ecological balance.
