Steven Brooke

Steven Brooke began his architectural photography career in 1979, inspired by artists such as Vermeer, de Hooch, Saenredam, Piranesi, Canaletto, and modern masters, including de Chirico and Hopper, who established the rigorous compositional paradigms of architectural depiction. Their principles of composition and artistic integrity have guided his work for his entire career and form the basis of his pedagogical methods.

In 1985 Brooke was awarded the National American Institute of Architects Honor Award in Photography, the highest award in this field. He is also the only five-time winner of the Photographer of the Year Award from the Florida Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Since its inception, Brooke has been the Photographer of Record for Seaside, Florida, the new town that ushered in the New Urbanism Movement and has shaped the planning of small towns throughout the country.

In 1991, Brooke received the Rome Prize and became a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. While in Rome, He produced his own “Vedute de Roma”, following in the documentary tradition of previous vedutisti such as Piranesi, Vasi, and Falda. The result of his work was “Views of Rome”, published by Rizzoli, the first book of its kind in over a century and the first to include the architecture of Modern Rome. Exhibitions of his work from this period were held in Rome and in the United States. “Views of Rome” received the AIA International Book Award in 1995.

In 1996, Brooke became a Fellow of the Albright Institute for Archaeological Research, ASOR, in Jerusalem. As a sequel to “Views of Rome”, and in the same 17th- and 18th-century vedute tradition, he photographed and wrote “Views of Jerusalem and the Holy Land”. This work was supported by a Graham Foundation Grant for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and a grant from Eastman Kodak.

Among Brooke’s over 40 books on architecture and design are “The Houses of Philip Johnson”; “Carrére and Hastings: The Masterworks”; “Addison Mizner”; “Great Houses of Virginia” (Foreword Magazine’s Gold Medal/Book of the Year Award); “Historic Houses of Florida” (Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Award); and books on the architecture of the American South and West. “Gardens of Miami” (2016) received the Award of Merit from the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Since 2010, Brooke has been teaching Architectural Photography and Composition at the University of Miami School of Architecture. In 2016, he received the Department’s Outstanding Faculty Award. Brooke also hosts a popular Youtube channel on Architectural Photography and Composition.

From the outset of his career, Brooke has been actively involved in historic preservation. He was on the front lines of the efforts to place the Miami Beach Art Deco District on the National Registry of Historic Places, and photographed the seminal book on the history of the preservation of the district, “Deco Delights”. For this work, he received Distinguished Achievement Medals from the Historical Museum of South Florida, the Art Deco Societies of America and the City of Miami Beach.
