Why shoot in Manual to RAW files
Photographing in Manual mode and capturing images to the RAW format offers many advantages for photographers who want more control and creativity over their photography and post-production. Inherent within is a clearer understanding of the exposure triangle which will further aid our creativity whilst rewarding us with superior results. This overall deeper understanding importantly allows us to photograph with post-production in mind which further aides our photographic abilities.
This workshop is aimed at photographers who wish to learn how to take full control of their photographic work-flow whilst understanding the inherent advantages of manual control in conjunction with the processing power of the RAW file.
The workshop will teach the easy way to shoot in manual mode along with why it is a vital skill for the photographer.
The RAW file format will too be explored with a focus on how immensely flexible they are in post-production, demonstrating their superiority over the JPEG format.
We will too consider the advantages of photographing with ‘post-production in mind’ for each and every capture, further improving our digital work-flow.

- Module 1
- Why the auto exposure settings on our cameras do not give us the best results. Why shooting in fully manual is actually easier, quicker whilst being more reliable than any of the auto modes. Why capturing in RAW is vastly superior to JPEG.
- Module 2
- The exposure triangle & why a deeper understanding of this allows for both greater creativity and more reliable results. Aperture: Control of Depth of Field Shutter-speed: Control of motion blur ISO: The camera’s sensitivity to light and how to manage digital noise in low light conditions whilst maintaining image quality.
- Module 3
- What exactly is Manual Control. How to understand and subsequently balance the Exposure Triangle in Manual Control; Aperture, Shutter-speed & ISO. How to assess the correct exposure.
- Module 4
- Non-destructive editing: Post-production of RAW image files, demonstrated using Adobe Lightroom, showing how immensely flexible these files are, whilst recognising the inflexibility of JPEG. Archiving: RAW files serve as a digital negative, preserving the original image data. This allows us to revisit and reprocess our photos in the future with updated editing techniques or software.

Specializing in people, products, events, and architecture, Rob’s lens is drawn to captivating light, acknowledging its role in creating compelling portraits. As a seasoned educator, he imparts his knowledge at The British Academy of Photography, guiding students to degree levels, and co-manages ‘GoFoto’ with photojournalist Alecsandra Dragoi.
