The Global Life of Shorebirds

The Global Life of Shorebirds

As part of the 2025 Xposure Conservation Summit, this presentation by Gerrit Vyn offers a captivating look into the extraordinary journeys of shorebirds. Each fall, these remarkable birds depart their Arctic breeding grounds—where they perform elaborate courtship displays and raise the next generation—to embark on migrations spanning thousands of miles to wintering areas as far as Tierra del Fuego and New Zealand. Along the way, they complete the longest non-stop flights known in the avian world. This presentation will explore their lives, ecology, and the critical importance of wetland stopover habitats where these birds rest and refuel during their arduous journeys.

Gerrit will highlight these imperilled species’ conservation challenges and share insights into their breathtaking resilience.
