Putting Together a Portfolio

A practical critique based session that helps photographers refine selection, strengthen sequencing, and present their strongest work.

Introduction:

A photographer’s portfolio acts as a clear expression of skill, intention, and identity. It shows what you can do, what you enjoy doing, and how you approach your craft. A strong portfolio goes far beyond selecting favourite images. It demands thought about structure, pacing, and the impression you want to leave with a viewer. In this workshop, Pete Muller guides participants through the process of shaping a portfolio that communicates purpose and leaves a memorable mark on potential clients, editors, and collaborators.

Description:

This two hour session offers a direct and practical look at how to craft a coherent portfolio. To begin, Pete presents his own portfolio and explains who he builds it for, why each image earns its place, and how sequencing changes the emotional flow of the work. He also shares the lessons he has learned throughout his career, offering participants a grounded sense of what works in real editorial and commercial conversations.

As the session continues, attention shifts to the participants. Each photographer has an opportunity to share their portfolio, explain their direction, and discuss the kind of work they hope to pursue. Pete provides targeted feedback and guidance, helping participants identify strengths, remove distractions, and refine the choices that shape a compelling body of work. Because the group learns from one another’s projects, the workshop often sparks ideas that extend beyond individual conversations.

The session welcomes photographers at all levels. Beginners gain structure and clarity for presenting their work, while intermediate and advanced photographers benefit from outside perspective and thoughtful critique. With a maximum group size of fifteen, there is enough time to explore each participant’s work meaningfully.

Modules:

Module 1:

The workshop begins with a review of Pete’s portfolio. He explains his thinking, his creative aims, and the way he hopes viewers respond to the work. After this introduction, participants present their portfolios one by one. They describe their goals, influences, and the direction they hope to pursue. Together, the group discusses how to strengthen sequencing, refine image selection, and build a portfolio that aligns with each photographer’s vision and ambition.

Suitable for:

Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

What Should Students Bring?

Participants should bring a body of work that represents their photography. A portfolio may be presented on a laptop, tablet, printed book, or any format they prefer.

Closing notes:

This workshop offers a focused environment where photographers can refine how they present themselves to the world. Pete provides candid guidance, thoughtful critique, and practical direction to help each participant shape a clear, cohesive, and impactful portfolio. Attendees leave with stronger selections, a sharper understanding of sequencing, and the confidence to present their work with purpose.
