Developing a Photo Project

How to develop a photography project with a personal focus: motivation, ideas, themes and approach.

Zed Nelson is a photographer whose subjects are varied, but whose work is always driven by a personal interest and a commitment to understanding an issue and exploring a subject. His work is about having an opinion, engaging with life, looking at what makes us human.

Nelson will show examples from his own work – stories and long-term projects – and discussion will focus on finding ideas, how to fund a project, developing a personal approach, building confidence and motivation, and improving ones work – with the aim of creating a project or story in your own voice.

Zed Nelson’s work as an award-winning documentary and portrait photographer who divides his time between assignments and long-term personal projects that explore contemporary society.

In his 30-year career as a documentary photographer Zed Nelson has worked for numerous international magazines, published three monograph photography books (‘Gun Nation’, ‘Love Me’ and ‘A Portrait of Hackney’) and been recognised by numerous photography awards, including First Prize in the World Press Photo Competition.

Nelson’s latest project, ‘The Anthropocene Illusion’ is currently being exhibited at Xposure Sharjah.
