Focus Group Description

The path into photojournalism looks very different today than it did even a decade ago. In this focus group, Carol Allen Storey leads a direct conversation about the realities emerging photojournalists now face, from financial pressure and safety concerns to changing ideas of credibility and authorship. The session focuses on lived experience rather than theory.

First, we will look at the practical challenges: funding work, staying safe, and securing fair pay in a crowded and competitive field. Then we will explore how citizen imagery, social platforms, and new technologies have reshaped how stories circulate and gain trust. Next, we will turn to opportunity. Collaboration, alternative distribution, and new storytelling approaches can open doors when traditional routes close. Throughout the discussion, participants will bring their own questions, ambitions, and doubts, keeping the conversation grounded and relevant.

About the Mentor

Carol Allen-Storey is an award winning documentary photographer who focuses on humanitarian and social issues. She serves as a long standing UNICEF Ambassador for Photography and has exhibited work internationally. Alongside her photographic practice, she lectures, mentors, and judges international awards, and she remains deeply committed to supporting the next generation as they navigate the responsibilities of contemporary photojournalism.

This is a 40 minute interactive roundtable discussion. Carol will open with key themes from her experience. Then she will guide a participant led discussion shaped by real concerns, shared insight, and honest exchange.
