My Octopus Teacher takes viewers into the minds of two unlikely subjects: a curious human being in search of belonging and the ingenious cephalopod who allows him into her world. The Academy and Bafta award-winning documentary broke the mould for natural history filmmaking and showcased South Africa’s Great African Seaforest (a previoulsy unknown marine wonderland) to mass audiences for the first time.
In this presentation director Pippa Ehrlich and cinematographer Roger Horrocks present key sequences from the film and break down how they used cinematography to create a visceral experience of the Octopus’ world. They will also explain the intentionality and execution behind each scene: whether to showcase the behavioural marvels of the octopus and her predators, take the viewer deep inside Craig’s emotional experience or to bring the magic of the kelp forest to life.
