Introduction

Explore the captivating behind-the-scenes of visual production while discovering the essential aspects that shape an impactful and memorable report. Let you be guided through each step of creating a photo report by Natalya Saprunova, who will share her expertise from the documentary stories she made.

Workshop Description

During this workshop, participants will be introduced to the principles that govern the selection of images for a story and editing to build a coherent series, with practical examples.

The students and the trainer will also analyze the images and benefit from discussions about the construction of storytelling. The photographer will help participants to make an initial sorting and reflect on the editing of a series.

Participants will leave with a more concrete idea of preparing shots of the visual narrative and editing during the photo report.

 

Module 1

Presentation of the documentary report produced by Natalya Saprunova
Through a visual presentation of Natalya Saprunova’s report, the photojournalist will explain her documentary approach and the choice of storytelling. This introduction sets the stage for the hands-on workshop to ⦁ Find the idea and angle of the report/series, ⦁ Formulate the intention of the project, ⦁ Define the visual writing style, ⦁ and Choose the equipment and camera settings.

Module 2

Storytelling exercise with printed pictures
Students will be divided into small groups and asked to construct a corpus of images from printed pictures to create a photo story.

Module 3

Editing of student’s pictures
Students who have their images printed or belong to a digital medium will benefit from Natalya Saprunova’s advice on constructing a photo story.:

15-20 pictures of the student’s choice (prints, computer)

    Natalya Saprunova

    Born in the Arctic Russia in Murmansk, Natalya first worked as a photojournalist for the daily newspaper Le Messager de Mourmansk during her higher education in French. Arriving in France in 2008, she worked in Marketing before becoming a French citizen and returning to photography. Graduated from the École des métiers de l'information (EMI) in Paris, she continues to explore the issues of modern society related to identity, youth, environment and spirituality. Passionate about the transmission of knowledge, she also teaches classes at the Graine de Photographe school in Paris.
