Introduction

This workshop invites you to explore photography to build genuine human connection. Learn how to approach others with curiosity, respect, and presence, fostering trust and capturing their essence with care. Together, we will practice creating images that reflect both the shared moment and your unique perspective, transforming the act of photography into a journey of mutual understanding and emotional depth.

Workshop Description

Join me for an immersive five-hour workshop for photographers of all levels, limited to six participants, to ensure a deeply personal and enriching experience. This program is for those who wish to move beyond simply capturing images, focusing instead on crafting intimate, respectful, and transformative stories. Through a blend of theory, fieldwork, and editing, we will explore how to build connections, foster trust, and create photographs that reflect the people you meet and your unique photographic voice.

We will delve into the essence of intimacy in documentary photography—a theme that resonates with anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the lives of others. Whether capturing moments of vulnerability, resilience, or quiet strength, this workshop will teach you how to approach others with love, respect, and curiosity, translating those qualities into meaningful visual narratives. You’ll learn how to navigate the challenges of entering someone else’s world, honoring their humanity while developing your technical and narrative skills.

The day will unfold in three modules: theory, where we discuss the ethics and practice of intimacy in photography; fieldwork, where you’ll engage with the world around you and connect with others through your lens; and editing, where we’ll refine the images into a cohesive, impactful story. Bring your camera and computer for editing, as we’ll work hands-on to hone your craft and create a final piece that speaks to your vision.

At its core, this workshop is about visual storytelling as a tool for empathy and understanding. Together, we will explore how photography can challenge stereotypes, break barriers, and foster mutual respect. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a deeper connection to your craft and a story that is a testament to the power of intimacy and the richness of human connection.

Module 1

  • Presentation and Theory (1 hour):

The workshop begins with a warm and welcoming introduction, establishing a collaborative space where facilitators and participants can share their aspirations and experiences. Ana will open the session with an inspiring dialogue on the art of building trust and empathy with the people she photographs, offering rare insights into how she gains profound access to their lives and stories. This foundational conversation will highlight the delicate balance between connection, respect, and storytelling.

A rich theoretical framework will explore the nuances of intimacy in photography, focusing on how images can represent others and reflect the photographer’s perspective. We will examine the multiple interpretations and meanings that images convey, especially in the context of human connection, offering participants critical tools to navigate these complexities in their work. Through examples from Ana’s practice, participants will gain practical insights into approaching protagonists with authenticity, curiosity, and care.

To bridge theory and practice, participants will conduct portraits and interviews with one another, fostering a sense of mutual understanding and trust. This immediate application of concepts will encourage self-reflection on the photographer’s role as a storyteller and mediator. By the end of the session, participants will have a deeper appreciation for how their personal and cultural contexts shape their vision and how their work can challenge perceptions, provoke compassion, and amplify the individuality of those they photograph.

Module 2

  • Fieldwork (3 hours) :

In this module, participants will venture into the field to craft a story that reflects the workshop’s central theme of intimacy and connection. Each participant will choose a narrative that speaks to them personally, using the tools and insights from the theoretical framework. The focus will be building trust, approaching protagonists respectfully, and capturing moments embodying human connection’s depth and nuance.

Before heading into the field, participants will create a shot list—a carefully considered guide of essential images to craft a compelling story. This exercise emphasizes the importance of visual planning and ensures that participants approach their work with intention and flexibility, balancing creative exploration with the need for narrative cohesion.

Participants will work independently, fully immersing themselves in the storytelling process. If desired, Ana will accompany participants in the field, providing guidance and support as they navigate creative challenges. This hands-off yet supportive approach empowers participants to trust their instincts, step out of their comfort zones, and engage meaningfully with the people and environments they photograph.

Fieldwork is not just about taking photos; it’s an exercise in patience, presence, and observation. By focusing on their chosen story’s small, powerful details, participants will begin to uncover photography’s profound potential to foster empathy, challenge perceptions, and create meaningful connections.

Each participant will return from the field with a curated selection of 30-40 images, which will be the foundation for the editing and storytelling work in Module 3. This module is about taking ownership of your creative process, trusting your voice, and laying the groundwork for images that document and inspire.

Module 3

    • Collective Editing and Closure (2 hours):

The final module is a deep dive into the art of editing and sequencing—a crucial yet challenging step in building a compelling visual story. Together, we will open a collective conversation about which images best serve the narrative and which, while strong, may not align with the flow or intent of the story. This collaborative session allows participants to refine their storytelling, ensuring each image contributes meaningfully to the sequence.

Editing is often one of the most challenging and transformative stages of working on a photo project. It is here that the story, atmosphere, and message take shape. Participants will receive constructive feedback on their curated selection of 50 images, learning how to organize their visual narratives coherently and compellingly. Through this process, they will develop the skills to make intentional choices that enhance their work’s emotional and narrative impact.

By the end of this session, participants will leave the workshop with a cohesive story that reflects their voice while honouring the humanity of their protagonists. We will also dedicate time for closing reflections and questions, allowing participants to share their experiences, insights, and takeaways from the workshop.
