Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert

Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and has been taking photographs since he was 9-years old. With a background in editorial and reportage photography, his travels since those early days have taken him around the world to over 100 countries, and his work has been internationally exhibited and published.

As well as working on self-initiated photo projects, Jeremy has photographed for most major newspapers and magazines, and for many NGOs and corporate clients. He hopes that by using his photography to document lives, stories and cultures, and sharing these with a wider audience, they can perhaps in some small way break down barriers, entertain and educate us all.

In an ongoing project since 1990 Jeremy has documented life in a Roma camp in Romania, charting the arc of life, with births, marriages, and deaths all featuring, as well as the transition in daily life from the post-Communist years. The project has been exhibited and published, and Jeremy looks for a book publisher for this work.

Jeremy has photographed many stories of his native Scotland, from a 2-year project on the Common Riding festivals of the Scottish Borders to following Rangers Football Club through the Scottish 3rd Division league, and a project looking at the legacy of the 1,900-year-old Roman-era Antonine Wall which crosses the country. His early black and white work from around Scotland has been published by Café Royal Books, on topics such as ‘North Sea Fishing’, ‘Shipbuilding on the River Clyde’, ‘Klondykers, Shetland’, ‘Scottish Orange Walks’ and more.

For a decade Jeremy was based in Tokyo, where he freelanced primarily for Western editorial clients including The Guardian, The Times, and more, travelling across Japan and the Asian Pacific region.

Throughout his career, he has been a regular photographer for the environmental campaign NGO Greenpeace International. His work for them highlights such issues as Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean, illegal tuna fishing, rainforest destruction in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, and rising sea levels on Pacific atolls.

Returning to Scotland in 2012 Jeremy co-formed the Document Scotland photography collective to promote and showcase contemporary documentary photography from his home country. Document Scotland has gone on to publish magazines, and exhibit across the UK and internationally.

In recent years Jeremy travelled through the Commonwealth twice as an official photographer on the Queen’s Baton Relay for the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games. These assignments saw him photograph in the 70 Commonwealth nations and territories, with his images published widely.

Most recently Jeremy worked on bringing order to his career’s photography, and this archive was acquired by the University of St Andrews in Scotland, for preservation and study.
