J. Tomas Lopez

Professor Lopez has degrees in Psychology and Philosophy from Fordham University, a Master of Media Arts in Film and Video and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography and Modernist Theory from the University of South Florida

Bulb: the ephemeral beauty of death

Lopez was the Editor for “Contemporary Issues” Focal Encyclopedia of Photography, Fourth Edition: Digital Imaging, Theory and Applications, History and Science. He has written essays on photographers and photography: Miquel Salom: The Tintype in the 21st Century; Through the Lens: Essay for Lowe Museum Photography Exhibition; and The Photograph Collector’s Guide, Bullfinch Press, among others.

J. Tomas Lopez has been awarded the Florida Individual Artist Grant, the Cintas Foundation Fellowship and a Cooper Fellowship, and other national and international grants and fellowships. He is recognized for his large-scale digital prints of diverse subject matter: AIDS/ArtReach, a portrait project; underwater photographs of the nude figure; politically charged iconic flags; riders and architectural studies in the Metro systems around the world; portraits of artists and writers with their eyes closed and most recently a study of dead flowers in gardens and cemeteries as a ‘memento mori’.

Professor Lopez has exhibited his work in over 375 group exhibitions and 40 solo exhibitions. His work is included in many prestigious collections: The Library of Congress, (DC) The Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American Art, La Biblioteque Nationale de France (Paris), The International Museum of Photography, the Museum of Modern Art, (NY) and in over thirty other museums and private collections. His work has been exhibited across the United States, Europe, South America, China, Japan and in numerous publications.

He has been at the University of Miami since 1994 where he lives and works with his wife, artist Carol Todaro.
