Stand Apart: Craft Your Own Photographic Masterpiece

Stand Apart: Craft Your Own Photographic Masterpiece

Introduction

We are overwhelmed by billions of pictures using the same techniques and showing the same spots. It seems that everything has been tried and done. Is nature photography definitively condemned to be a catalogue of déjà vu? Samuel Feron, a nature photographer with 20 years of experience, has always been motivated by creativity and by developing personal views. During this workshop, he will share his approach and provide tips so you can create your art and finally stand out of the crowd.

Workshop Description

This two-hour workshop is divided into three modules designed to help participants overcome creativity challenges and discover practical strategies to ignite their unique vision. Through compelling examples and photographs, we will delve into the essence of creativity and explore fresh approaches that break away from predictable, formulaic techniques.

Participants will actively engage their imagination and critical thinking to identify overused elements in photography. Recognizing these “déjà-vu” characteristics is a vital step toward producing work that is truly personal and independent. By the end of the workshop, attendees will gain valuable tools to foster originality and develop their creative voice.

Module 1

A brief history of nature photography before the Big Bang

In this module, we will first plunge into the beginning of landscape photography to hint at what it used to be in the 20th century. Some iconic photographers, such as Ansel Adams, will be presented.
After a tribute to the pioneers, we derive the Big Bang and its successive revolutions: digital cameras, techniques, and social media.
What are their impacts on the photography? Do they kill, or do they free photography?

Module 2

Main traps to avoid

The invasion of social media often leads to repetitive and systematic photographic methods. What traps should we avoid?
What could we do instead?
We will see how we can still create from the moment we think differently from others. Imagine and create your universe!

Module 3

Sources of Inspiration

In the last module, we will explore photographs illustrating how we can stand out from the crowd. Some of them come from Samuel’s work so you will know the secrets behind them! Other pictures are chosen from the Terra Quantum community founded by Samuel. Terra Quantum is a collective of 400 photographers worldwide, all selected by an international jury.

Samuel Féron has been photographing Nature for 20 years, with a predilection for desert corners, burning or icy, where man's place is precarious: volcanoes of Hawaii, deserts of the Atacama, forests of Colombia… Samuel's photographic exploration is not only a discovery of places. It is an artistic exploration where the photographer’s eye builds new perspectives. Samuel is a juror of Px3 (Paris), of the New York Photography Awards. He founded the site of excellence, Terra Quantum (2015). In 2024, he made his first photographic film Matter! Samuel lives in France.
