How to Develop a Photography Book in 2026
A practical guide to shaping ideas, sequencing images, and preparing a publishable book project in today’s evolving market.
Introduction:
Many photographers dream of publishing a book yet are unsure how to begin. This workshop will guide you through the essential decisions and practical steps involved in turning a photographic project into a coherent, well presented publication. You will explore how to refine your topic, curate your images and choose a format that suits both your creative intentions and the realities of production. The session also explains how to approach publishers or printers, and what to consider if you choose to self publish.
Description:
This workshop is designed to support photographers through every stage of developing a book, from the first idea to the final printed object. A book often represents the culmination of a long term photographic journey, a personal story or a body of work that deserves thoughtful presentation. To achieve this, the photographer must reflect deeply on the purpose of the project and work with partners who can help translate that intention into a clear, engaging publication.
Across the session, Gilles will introduce both conceptual and practical aspects of creating a book. You will examine curation, design, production and printing, alongside the artistic, technical and business decisions that shape a successful project. The workshop also covers publishing contracts, funding options, the advantages and challenges of working with a publisher, and what it means to self publish. Participants will learn how to prepare book proposals, understand distribution channels and navigate professional relationships with editors, designers and printers.
The workshop concludes with case studies and testimonies from photographers who have successfully published their books, offering insight into the creative and logistical choices behind real projects.
